It was back on January 23, 2022 that the Phil Lenehan trained Lektra Gal (Zambora Brockie x Lektra Viki) broke the 305 metre track record at Tara Raceway with a time of 17.28 seconds.
The previous record – 17.35 seconds – had been held by the Lee Bartholomew trained Arctic Bear (Flying Stanley x Galactic Cat).

Then, six months later it was Urana Meat Loaf (Dalgetty x Zippy’s Me Mum) who equalled the time of 17.28 seconds for Tracie Price. And a further nine months later, Peter Keane’s Hello Keen (Fernando Bale x Sisco Sizzle) became the third joint record holder.
Come last Sunday and Wind Whiskers had been lining up for her sixth start over 305 metres. And with a previous best time of 17.45 seconds she was looking to maintain her unbeaten run over the short course.
The only difference this time was the daughter of Beast Unleashed and Takers To Vegas now had a new trainer – Dave Green of Millicent recently taking over from the Newman kennel for Victorian owners, the Michelle Rhodes-managed Show Girls Syndicate.
And her unbeaten 305 metres run always looked likely to remain intact after she quickly found the front before scoring a 1¼ length win over Huntsman. Adding to the effort was the winning time – a track record 17.27 seconds.
With 15 wins, seven seconds and four thirds Wind Whiskers has now accumulated 71 points in this year’s Mount Gambier Greyhound of the Year (GOTY) award.
As far as the GOTY scoring is concerned, 10 Sunday meetings now remain this year. And in what looks to have developed into a two-dog race, Wind Whiskers currently holds a 12 point lead over Edenhope trainer Captain Abbott’s Mister Cadillac.

Mister Cadillac, a son of Magical Bale and Koa Lass, strung together his third successive 400 metre win at Tara Raceway last Sunday when defeating Ollie Deeds by 1¾ lengths in a quick 22.87 seconds.
The January 2022 white and brindle dog has now raced on 104 occasions for 22 wins and 52 minor placings. As far as this year’s GOTY is concerned he has won nine races, run 12 seconds and eight thirds.
Last year he shared the GOTY award with his kennelmate Top Cadillac after the pair both accumulated 57 points.
Meanwhile, Bec Romyn, who trained Renewed, runner-up to Zipping Zarbo in the 2021 Mount Gambier Cup, was back at Tara Raceway last Sunday when successful with Tattooed Beast in the Da’Leni Meats Maiden Stake (305 m).

These days Romyn is based at Moe with partner Braden Finn who bred Tattooed Beast, a May 2024 son of Beast Unleashed and Fast Wheels.
“Fast Wheels is well bred, being by KC And All out of She’s Got Wheels, a daughter of Fernando Bale and Zara’s Entity,” Romyn said. “But she never raced due to injury. This is her first litter and she’s certainly been a lovely mum.
“Lewiston trainer Cam Forshaw, who is my daughter Ashlee’s partner, has the only two of the litter to have so far been named given that they are still too young to race in Victoria.”
And Tattooed Beast did the job pretty well, especially for a 17-month-old pup having his first start, when finishing 3¾ lengths clear of Lilly’s Wish in a smart 17.55 seconds.
