Price’s 100 winners ‘a real team effort’

Karen and Ben Price and handler Pat Sharam with Compton Minnie, Tracie Price’s 100th Tara Raceway winner for the year.

The win of Compton Minnie in yesterday’s Produce Store Stake (400 metres) was local greyhound trainer Tracie Price’s 100th winner at Tara Raceway this year.

And it was the fifth time in the past six years that the Compton-based trainer has been successful on 100 or more occasions for the year at the Mount Gambier track.

So far in 2023 at Tara Raceway multiple wins have come in the form of 16 doubles, 12 trebles, four winners on four occasions and five on Sunday, June 18 with Spot On Yvonne, Myall Man, Whiskey Chaser, Hooked On Love and Bad Move.

Price’s biggest win this year has been with Honey Rocks in the $10,000 Carlin & Gazzard Summer Classic (512 m) final which was run at Tara Raceway on Sunday, February 12.

Well on the way to a record-breaking year, Price said his operation was centred upon a real team effort.

“There’s certainly plenty happening here at the moment,” he said. “And it’s a real team effort, headed by my wife Karen along with the kids Ben and Sarah.

“But it goes a lot further than that with Moesha and Stuey and Pat invaluable on race days. Then there’s also Kara and Chris, Hamish, Damien and Storm, and Brooklyn who are all part of the team.”

With Price having greyhounds engaged yesterday at Mount Gambier, Angle Park and Warrnambool race meetings it had once again been a case of calling on the team.

He’s also thrown his support behind Moesha Canala and Stuey Sharam in their bids to obtain trainers’ licences.

“Look, I’m more than happy to get behind them in their bid to become further involved,” he said. “We need more active participants in the sport. They are good people and we don’t want to lose them.”

And not for the first time, Price – in his “Good Samaritan” role – recently helped out an away trainer in distress by lending him a vehicle when he encountered mechanical problems at Tara Raceway.
