Death of long-time trainer

David Brodhurst, a long-time trainer and supporter of Mount Gambier greyhound racing, died at home at Serviceton last Sunday after a long illness. He was 72.

Involved in greyhound racing for much of his life, Brodhurst and his wife Valerie became associated with the Mount Gambier Greyhound Racing Club in 1997 when racing commenced at Lake Terrace East.

And they continued to race at Tara Raceway, regularly making the 400 kilometre round trip with their small team, until early 2020 when ill health prevented him from continuing in the sport that he had enjoyed so much.

Brodhurst’s last winner was at Tara Raceway on Thursday, November 28, 2019 with Midnight Ruby. In fact, that year was one of his best – four doubles and a total of 24 winners for the year.

Most of the Brodhurst greyhounds were “bargain buys” although one of their better ones turned out to be a giveaway greyhound by the name of Two Jobs.

By Cosmic Rumble out of Enlightment, Two Jobs found her way down to Serviceton in early 2017 after winning a maiden 447 metre event at Port Augusta in slow time.

But some ordinary performances at Tara Raceway soon had her booked in for the Greyhound Adoption Program (GAP).

As luck would have it, though, on Friday, May 5 – and with a record of one win from 26 starts – the fawn bitch stepped out over 512 metres and won by 10 lengths in a best of day 30.21 seconds.

That put a halt to the GAP proceedings. And two months later Two Jobs won the Eric Lewis Memorial (600 m) at the Anniversary Cup meeting.

RIP David Brodhurst.
