The Tara Raceway Pick 6 competition ended an 18 month losing streak at the recent Mount Gambier Cup meeting when Kevin Patzel, a Pick 6 winner six years ago, landed the $500 jackpot.

Sponsored by Tracie and Karen Price of Trackside Pet Meats, who add $10 to the pool each week, the Pick 6 is a free competition that requires on-course patrons to select the winners of races three through to eight at the Sunday meetings.

Patzel’s previous win in April 2019 had also been a $500 result after School Report, Black Spring, Wanchai Express, China Catch ‘Em, Ben Nevis and Lektra Brandy had been successful.

And he did pretty well to land the Cup day Pick 6 after Way Cool ($3.10), Muster ($4.60), Royal Nangar ($4.80), Minnie’s My Mum ($2.80), Mikaela’s Joy ($1.85) and Aston Gozo ($2.20) won the designated races.

So with the Pick 6 having finally been won again, the jackpot for last Sunday’s meeting reverted to $100 with $10 a week now to be added until the pool reaches $500 or having been won in the interim.

Mind you, it didn’t take long for the interim to come around and make it consecutive winning meetings for the Pick 6.

Successfully selecting the six winners last Sunday – Dell Mister ($1.60), Is He Lee ($3.20), Paw Some Storm ($3.20), Oregon Caldwell ($1.33), Prickle Town ($1.70) and Imposter ($2.40) – was Kevin “KD” Douglas who finally had won the long-running competition.

Other Pick 6 winners in more recent times include Steve Patzel, Kevin Jones, Ken Feltus, Kerry Hawker, Richard Clayfield, Chris Johnson and Daniel Giersch.
