“It was at the suggestion of fellow Warracknabeal trainer Ian Bibby, who recently raced a few greyhounds at Mount Gambier, that I decided on a trip with Fifield and Weipa to Tara Raceway for last Sunday’s meeting,” said Shayne Fisher.
“I had been over here a long time ago with a dog called Caralo Boy. But these days with weekday work commitments I reckon the Mount Gambier Sunday meetings could work in pretty well for me on a semi-regular basis.”
Fifield, a daughter of Fabregas and Dyna Yella, was having only her second start after a fourth at Horsham last month when lining up from box one in the Bartholomew Pick 6 Maiden Stake (400 m).
And the 52-year-old Fisher would have been thankful that he heeded Bibby’s advice after Fifield, a daughter of Fabregas and Dyna Yella, led all the way for a length win over Compton Gumdrops in 23.66 seconds.
“That was a satisfying win given that I won five races at Horsham with Dyna Yella and then bred the litter,” he said. “That was also the litter’s first winner.”
Actually, Fisher went very close to making the 3½-hour trip back to Warracknabeal with a double after Weipa led everywhere but on the line in the Ary Sports Bar & Bistro Stake (400 m). In the end the son of US sire Barts Outofmyway went down by a half head to Honey Rocks in 23.36 seconds.
Involved in the sport for 30 years, after his parents had been heavily involved with greyhound racing, he rates his best dog as Ingleba, a son of Mr. Chatters, winner of the 1989 Mount Gambier Cup for Alan Evans.
“I took him over as a giveaway in February 1996 after he had won a couple of races at Geelong and Wangaratta. Later we won six races at Horsham and one at Robinvale with him.”
