Final hit-out for classic contenders

Wednesday, February 5, 2020

Well performed youngsters Tandiki, Ashby Mayhem and Vossy will have their final hit-out for the Summer Classic (512 m) when they clash in Sunday’s Bourne Kennels Grade 5 final (512 m) at Tara Raceway.

Summer Classic contender Tandiki.

Tandiki and Ashby Mayhem chased home Dyna Carnie in a heat last week, the winner running a flying 29.43 seconds and looking the one to beat again on Sunday after drawing box one.

But Tandiki, trained at Compton by Tracie Price, lost no friends when going down by 3¼ lengths and running a personal time of 29.66 seconds while Brendan Bunworth’s third-placed Ashby Mayhem clocked 29.79 seconds.

And Vossy, having her first run over 512 metres, looked pretty good when leading all the way in the ProGreyhoundTips.com Stake – the second heat of the grade five series – and clocking 29.99 seconds for Price.

Heats of the Summer Classic, for dogs and bitches whelped on or after January 1, 2018, will be run on Sunday week with Price looking a strong chance of finally winning the event which was first run in 2015 when won by Cryer’s Ricky.

Price went close in 2018 with Dynamite Danger who defeated Galactic Panther by a nostril in a heat of the classic, the pair then staging another terrific battle a week later in the final with the Panther turning the tables by a similar margin.

Sweet On Me returns to Tara Raceway on Sunday.

Another Price-trained contender is Tandiki’s litter brother Rocketline, not running on Sunday but a 29.76 seconds winner last week.

Allendale East trainer David Peckham, who also is yet to win the classic, has Sweet On Me back after a month’s break, the black bitch drawing box one in the Bartholomew Pick 6 Stake (512 m).

Missing on Sunday is Sweet On Me’s litter brother Call Me Billy, likely to be back next week after sustaining a minor injury last week. And with personal best times of 29.67 seconds and 29.58 seconds respectively the littermates are also serious classic contenders.
