Captain bowls over the opposition

Wednesday, September 18, 2019

Edenhope greyhound trainer Captain Abbott’s best year ever at Tara Raceway continued at last Sunday’s waterlogged meeting when Bowled Harro scored a shock win in the Rock’s Retreat grade five series final (400 metres).

Bowled Harro wins the grade 5 series 400 metre final at last Sunday’s Tara Raceway meeting.

Lining up from box seven as the rank outsider at $15, Bowled Harro chased the tearaway leader Another Scenario to the home turn where he took the rails run and went on to a 3¾ lengths win over Azumi Stringer in a best of day 23.07 seconds.

A winner of seven races at Tara Raceway this year for owner John Nugent and Abbott, Bowled Harro is by Kinloch Brae out of Glass Roof, a beautifully bred daughter of Brett Lee and West On Bluebird.

Cap Abbott gives Black Spring a well-earned drink after his win over 732 metres at Tara Raceway last Sunday.

Glass Roof, who won nine races on Victorian provincial tracks, is a member of a litter that also includes Shared Equity, a winner of 31 races and $292,000 in stakemoney, Shared Bonus (45, $158,000) and West On Delly (14, $87,000).

Bowled Harro’s win last Sunday was the second leg of a double – Abbott’s 12th this year – after Black Spring had won the Winningformula.net.au Stake (732 m) earlier in the day and opened up a handy lead in the Greyhound of the Year award.

With 3½ months still remaining in this year’s GOTY, Black Spring sits on 12 wins at the track and with 59 points leads Dimora Flash by eight. Last year’s winner, Paraphernalia, won 13 races and accumulated 63 points.
