Youngster fends off the opposition

Tara Raceway track watchers were on the money yesterday when well-backed first starter Fend Them Off led all the way to defeat Rosa Matisse by 5¼ lengths in 17.68 seconds in the Rock’s Tavern Maiden Stake (305 metres).

Owned by Queensland-based Duane Dalton, Fend Them Off is trained at Southern Cross by Ray Mahony who reared and later broke-in the brindle dog.

But according to Mahony, involved in the sport for more than 50 years, the March 2020 whelping hadn’t been showing him a lot in his early trials.

“Initially, I’d been trialling him at Warrnambool where he hadn’t really shown me a great deal,” he said. “It was then that I decided to switch him to the Mount Gambier track where he found plenty in his first trial.

“He trialled 17.69 seconds over the 305 metre distance and the track watchers assured me that would make him very hard to beat in a maiden race.”

Bred at Lara by Darren Fisher, Fend Them Off is by Fernando Bale out of Made First who raced on 100 occasions for 10 wins, 30 minor placings and $40,000 in stakemoney.

Mahony, another interstate trainer hampered by border restrictions, had last been successful at Tara Raceway on May 23 when the Dalton bred and owned Tapering Off impressed when scoring in a maiden/one win over 512 metres in 29.90 seconds.
