My Lady Panama now a three-State winner

The all the way win of My Lady Panama from box one in last Sunday’s Commercial Hotel Mixed Stake (400 metres) at Tara Raceway resulted in the daughter of Superior Panama and Super Cute becoming a three-State winner.

Her career had kicked off in NSW where she won 10 races at Gunnedah and Muswellbrook before joining Rob Jehu’s Macarthur kennels at the end of last year.

He was successful with the black bitch, owned in NSW by Kerrie Verhagen, at Horsham and Warrnambool prior to venturing over to Mount Gambier where he won with My Lady Panama at her fourth start.

She had put the writing on the wall last month with a quick 22.96 seconds when runner-up over 400 metres behind Masani Girl prior to defeating Lakeview Heather last Sunday by 1¾ lengths in 23.22 seconds.

For Jehu, who turned 69 last week, his involvement with greyhounds goes to back to when he was only 15. And it’s fair to say it’s been a colourful involvement with Morning Tears being one of his better performers.

“I raced greyhounds inside the Glenburnie race track and won three SA St Legers on the plumpton out at Mil Lel,” he said. “And it was certainly busy back when I was running a breaking-in track at Camperdown which at times housed up to 200 dogs.”

In more recent times Jehu had worked in WA for 11 years prior to retiring. Six months ago he set up on 2½ acres at Macarthur where he now has three in work.

Meanwhile, members of the Branxholme Wallacedale Football Netball Club – also known as the Saints – enjoyed their day at the dogs on Sunday afternoon.

The club was formed in 1982 by the merger of Branxholme and Wallacedale. It boasts a rich history with the older of the two predecessor clubs, Branxholme, dating back to 1879.

The combined club now features five football teams and eight netball teams, including both junior and senior.
