Enigmatic greyhound and trainer combine for top win

With the Portland-based greyhound Agent Meatball and his trainer Brian Weis, both seemingly difficult to follow at times, it’s probably a toss-up as to who the bigger enigma is.

By Fernando Bale, Agent Meatball is out of Sweet About Lola who won seven races on Victorian provincial tracks back in 2015-16.

Greyhound racing’s enigmatic couple – Brian Weis and Agent Meatball.

And he’s the greyhound who hit the ground running at Tara Raceway in May 2022 after having copped a suspension from Tasmanian stewards for failing to chase in a maiden race at Hobart.

That had been a couple of months prior. And following Agent Meatball’s 12 length maiden win over Myola Red Boy at the local track it’s probably fair to say the unfortunate 28-day suspension was just a distant memory.

After all, with a gallop of 29.61 seconds the black dog had just run the fastest maiden 512 metre time since Spring Bridge had clocked 29.63 seconds back in 2018 at the Mount Gambier Cup carnival.

Agent Meatball ended the year with six wins at Tara Raceway. But it would be May 2023 before he once again ran his rivals ragged at a Tara Raceway time-graded meeting with a seven length win over Spinning Pixie in 29.52 seconds.

In a rare moment of self-revelation, Weis at the time had conceded that the win had been a real drought-breaker.

“Well for most of this year he’d been on the sidelines and virtually did nothing for three months.

“So I said to my wife Sally, who owns Agent Meatball, we needed to either place him in GAP (Greyhounds As Pets) or put him back into work.”

Nine starts and some four months later Agent Meatball was still chasing his second win this year when lining up from box two in last Thursday’s Produce Store TG5+W Stake over 512 metres.

But he was never going to be beaten. On the line he had 6½ lengths to spare over Blue Sky Boy in what was yet another quick winning time of 29.63 seconds – and Weis’ eighth winner of the year at Tara Raceway.

Agent Meatball’s litter, whelped in March 2020, has turned out to be pretty handy given that it has so far produced 59 winners and $255,000 in prize money.

Meanwhile, Tim Richards of Meningie took the training honours last Thursday with a running treble – Spinning Pixie, Lady Kate and Wickham.

Spinning Pixie, a daughter of Aston Dee Bee and Purpose Driven, led all the way in the Cadillac Racing Stake (600 m) when defeating Dusty Barbara by 4½ lengths in 35.64 seconds.

Also leading all the way was Lady Kate in the Carlin & Gazzard TG5+W Stake (400 m). By Mepunga Blazer out of Group 3 winner Waterloo Kate, she defeated kennelmate Sir Patrick by 1½ lengths in a personal best time of 23.18 seconds.

And Wickham, a litter brother to Spinning Pixie, took up the running turning for home in the Trackside Pet Meats Pick 6 TG5+W Stake (400 m) before holding off Captain Red Tin for a two length win in 23.64 seconds.
