It took a while but 119-start veteran Maximum Refusal’s win in the Klaassens Contractors Mixed Stake (732 metres) at Tara Raceway on Sunday was Allendale East trainer David Peckham’s first success over the distance.

In what was a terrific race, the son of Fernando Bale and city-winning stayer Kilkee Flex led all the way, defying Ebby Tock to run him down when hanging on for a three-quarter length win in 44.24 seconds.

In Peckham’s kennels since April last year, Maximum Refusal was originally trained by him for Adelaide owner Tim Aloisi.

“Later, I also took over the ownership of Maximum Refusal and Denzell Bale after Tim offered me a package deal,” Peckham said.

Maximum Refusal , who was having only his second run over the distance at Tara Raceway, figured in Emani Bale’s record-breaking race at Mount Gambier Cup time when Nellie Noodles’ record was lowered to 43.10 seconds.

On that occasion, Maximum Refusal finished third in a time of 43.56 seconds, still one of the quicker times recorded over the distance at Tara Raceway.

As things turned out, it had been by pure chance that Peckham’s brindle dog had actually raced at Tara Raceway on Sunday.

“To be honest, I reckon he races better at Murray Bridge over 680 metres but there was no race for him last Friday so I opted for Mount Gambier on the Sunday. Sometimes things work in your favour,” he said.
