Chasing a share of $300,000

A greyhound by the name of Captain Larry has come a fair way in the space of 16 months.

He’s the dog that won on debut over 400 metres at Tara Raceway early in October 2021. He’s also the dog that last Saturday night at The Meadows defeated Revolution and Wow She’s Fast in a heat of the Group 1 Australian Cup (525 metres).

Garry Siney, Christine Yourgules, Grant Sterzl, David Peckham, Ross Schurgott and Samantha Sterzl with Captain Larry after his maiden win at Tara Raceway.

And the race caller was suitably impressed. “He was big last week, even bigger this week.” Then, “this is the dog that only a couple of months ago was going around Mount Gambier,” he said, incredulously.

Now Larry’s gone and drawn box one in Saturday night’s final which carries $300,000 to the winner.

Raced by the Ross Schurgott-managed Nineofus Syndicate, Captain Larry was purchased off an on-line advertisement for an unnamed NSW dog by El Grand Senor out of Chill Easy.

Originally trained at Allendale East by David Peckham – also one of the syndicate members – the brindle dog won six races at Murray Bridge, five at Mount Gambier and one at Angle Park before being transferred to Lara trainer Brendan Pursell in October.

Needless to say, Adelaide-based Schurgott is over the moon. Finally, after 15 years he’s come up with a greyhound in a Group 1 final.

“It all started with the Viking Syndicate back in 2008,” he said. “The Nineofus Syndicate, which actually has 10 in it, is an offshoot of the original one.

“There are six of us heading over to Melbourne for the Australian Cup. And win, lose or draw it’s going to be one hell of a night.”
