The Mount Gambier Greyhound Racing Club’s Calcutta, as has been the case for more than 30 years, will once again be the lead-in to this year’s Mount Gambier Cup carnival at Tara Raceway.
Always an entertaining social night, this year’s Calcutta will be conducted at the Tara Raceway Clubrooms on Saturday, March 23 with meals available from 6 p.m. to 7.30 p.m. and the Calcutta draw commencing at 7.30 p.m.
Once again, Chris Manser, of Green Triangle Real Estate, will auction the Fairthorne Forestry Mount Gambier Cup runners in his own inimitable style. Heats of the Group Listed event will be run the following afternoon over 512 metres.
Last year, the purchasers of the eventual winner, Xtreme Caution, collected more than $4000 for a modest outlay.
Tim Holmes, who is co-ordinating the Calcutta night in conjunction with Chris Klaassens, said this week that the menu included an entrée, a main course (roast chicken, roast beef or salt and pepper squid plus a choice of hot and cold sides) and dessert.
“Pre-paid meals will be $25 for adults and $10 for children (12 and under) while on the night the cost will be $30 for adults and $15 for children.
“Besides the Calcutta draw and auction there will be plenty of prizes on offer as well as live music,” said Holmes, who can be contacted on 0400 060 435 in regard to the purchase of tickets.
Tickets can also be purchased from the secretary’s office at Tara Raceway on race days.
The final of the Fairthorne Forestry Mount Gambier Cup will be run on Sunday, March 31 with the winner receiving $15,000.
