Bourne Maximum breaks long run of outs . . . and young Carisma’s smile says it all

Raylene Gavin and her granddaughter Carisma were all smiles after Bourne Maximum was successful at Tara Raceway on Thursday.

Former Mount Gambier greyhound Bourne Maximum broke a long run of outs when leading all the way in Thursday’s Bartholomew Pick 6 Stake (1-4 wins) over 400 metres at Tara Raceway to defeat Bungaloo Sarah by 1½ lengths in a time of 23.72 seconds.

The win was the daughter of Barcia Bale and Maximum Bella’s first for Killarney husband and wife training team, Kevin and Raylene Gavin, who picked her up as a giveaway back in July last year.

It was also Bourne Maximum’s first success in more than 14 months after her first two wins had come in the space of a week at Tara Raceway back in February last year.

Thursday’s win was Raylene’s first at Tara Raceway this year after Kevin had been successful early in January with Calthorpe.

“She’d run half a dozen or so minor placings for us prior to today so it was really nice to see her finally win a race because she really does try hard,” Gavin said.

The couple makes regular trips to Mount Gambier’s Thursday meetings, accompanied whenever possible by their granddaughter Carisma Corpica of Koroit.

Carisma, one of the regular catchers at Warrnambool meetings, handled the winner for her grandparents. And there was a genuine sense of excitement as she returned with Bourne Maximum, her smile saying it all.
