After a break of almost three years the Mount Gambier v. Warrnambool Border Challenge is set to return in October.
With the intention of alternating the event on a yearly basis, the inaugural $5800 Border Challenge was conducted at Warrnambool over 450 metres on Thursday, December 5, 2019.
The series has been on hold ever since due to the pandemic and the border restrictions that came with it.
However, Warrnambool Greyhound Racing Club manager, Craig Monigatti, and Mount Gambier Greyhound Racing Club programming representative Jason Newman recently discussed running the Border Challenge final at Tara Raceway over 512 metres on Sunday, October 30.
This has since been confirmed and heats will be run at both tracks – with some restrictions in place. Four greyhounds from each club will then contest the final.
Mount Gambier suffered an early setback in the 2019 Border Challenge when Galactic Titan was a scratching. This left Wanchai Express (Nicole Stanley), Galactic Mojo (Steve Bartholomew) and Flash Jackie (David Peckham) representing the visitors.
But it was the Phil Lenehan owned and trained Lektra Fireball who just kept coming. Eventually the son of Destini Fireball x Lektra Angie grabbed victory by the narrowest of margins in a time of 25.48 seconds over a gallant Super Panda.
Best of the Mount Gambier runners was Wanchai Express who finished fourth.
