Blue Khaki goes the extra distance

Former Victorian chaser Blue Khaki had no trouble in making the step up to 512 metres for local trainer Ben Price at Tara Raceway last Sunday.

In Price’s Compton kennels since early July, Blue Khaki had previously won over 400 metres at Warragul, prior to stringing together three wins on the trot over 400 metres at Tara Raceway. The blue dog then ran a close-up second behind Cruising Billy at Angle Park over 342 metres.

The son of Shima Shine and Baby Talk lined up in box eight in the Da’Leni Meats Stake (512 m) last Sunday with Aston Castle, trained at Dennington by Dustin Drew, looking to be the main danger from box one.

But Blue Khaki had no trouble in finding the front before running out a 6½ length winner over Aston Castle in a best of day 29.80 seconds.

Earlier in the day, Drew had scored a good win in the Produce Store Stake (400 m) with the Hannah Garner owned Naughty Norm who had been having his first run on the track.

A 22.12 seconds winner over 390 metres at Warrnambool on the Thursday night prior, the son of Aston Rupee and Mepunga Bella never looked like being beaten on Sunday afternoon when defeating Fawn Beast by 6¾ lengths in 23.04 seconds.

The Bouchier boys – Isaak, Kev and Paddy – were back on track to watch Gus Limes win on debut last Sunday. Pictured right is trainer Peter Crawley.

The Bouchier boys – Kev, Isaak and Paddy – were back on track on Sunday to watch Gus Limes make his racing debut in the Greg Martlew Autos Maiden Stake over 305 metres.

Trained at Mortlake by Peter Crawley, Gus Limes is by Aston Rupee out of Elle Limes – a winner of 10 races at Tara Raceway and a daughter of Spring Gun and Grimsby Girl.

And the brindle dog led all the way from box seven when hanging on and defeating Aston Gosset – having his 10th race start – by a nose in 17.92 seconds.

Also opening her winning account in the Commercial Hotel Maiden (400 m) last Sunday was Bomb Rocky for North Bendigo owner-trainer Aaron Blake.

Drawn in box one, Bomb Rocky settled in third spot and railed through on the home turn before running out a 2¼ length winner over Discouraged in 23.55 seconds.

Bred by Dailly Greyhound Farms, Bomb Rocky is by the Irish sire Ballymac Bolger out of JD Bombshell (KC And All x JD Forever).

“We’ve had her for only a couple of weeks,” Blake said. “But it would appear that she’s bred to run further than 400 metres.”

Patrice Lass finally broke through for her first win this year for Killarney owner-trainer Kevin Mugavin when successful in the Trackside Pet Meats Pick 6 Stake (400 m).

Only fairly away from box two, the daughter of Feral Franky and Cloona Lass quickly took a rails run down the back before finding the front off the back and running out a three-quarter length winner over Harry Chana in 23.59 seconds.

Meanwhile, the all the way win of Wind Whiskers over Unique Destiny in the Gordon Refrigeration Mixed Stake (512 m) has seen the daughter of Beast Unleashed x Takers To Vegas establish a narrow lead over Come On Kilkenny in the Mount Gambier Greyhound of the Year.

With both greyhounds trained at Moorak by Melissa Freitag, Wind Whiskers picked up four points, one more than Come On Kilkenny, the son of Fernando Bale and Naughty Cazza holding out Mister Cadillac for a three-quarter length win in 23.05 seconds in the Sealeys Springworks Stake (400 m).

Wind Whiskers has now won 10 races this year at Tara Raceway and run four seconds and four thirds for a total of 48 points. And Come On Kilkenny has recorded nine wins, nine seconds and two thirds for 47 points.

Points are awarded on a 4, 2, 1 basis for 512 m, 600 m and 732 m races while 305 m and 400 m races are scored on a 3, 2, 1 basis.

Aston Darwin, a son of Aston Rupee and Aston Opal, brought up his first 600 metre success and fourth consecutive win at Tara Raceway for local owner-trainer Kevin Patzel.

Away well from box one in the Icon Signs Mixed Stake (600 m), Aston Darwin was never headed when leading all the way and eventually running out a 5¼ length winner over Flax Mill in a time of 35.37 seconds.

And Portland trainer Nicole Stanley landed her sixth winner at Tara Raceway this year with My Boy Josh when the son of Bernardo and Looks Like Turbo scored a comfortable win in the Quickmix Concrete Group Mixed Stake (400 m).

Always on the pace from box one, the fawn dog eventually ran out a 6½ length winner over Paw Ignite in a tidy 23.16 seconds.
