Thursday’s Tara Raceway meeting started off in great fashion for the Bartholomew greyhound kennels of Worrolong . . . and just kept getting better.
Galactic Horizon lined up from box one in the first race, the Produce Store Maiden Stake (400 metres), as the only member of the August 2017 Paddy Whacker x Galactic Rumball litter still to win a race.
Actually, the sizeable 31 kilogram brindle bitch, after an injury-interrupted start to her career, had made her race debut only the week prior when running fourth to Keen One.
But Galactic Horizon always had last Thursday’s race in her keeping for owner Robert Chuck and Steve Bartholomew, leading all the way to defeat kennelmate Dick Grayson (raced by Bartholomew’s wife Lee and their daughter Elysia and trained by the former) by 3¾ lengths in a tidy 23.21 seconds.
Dick Grayson’s litter brother, Rough Pearl, made amends in the third race, the Winningformula.net.au Stake (400 m), when working to the front down the back after an average start and then finishing strongly for a 4¾ length win over Banjo Bliss in 23.36 seconds.
By Dyna Double One out of West On Jorji, Rough Pearl is raced in the same interests as Dick Grayson, the February 2018 pair purchased as pups from Lewiston breeder Rob Harnas who has since bred a second litter out of her, this time by Mepunga Blazer.
West On Jorji, a five-time winner in WA before being relocated to SA where she won seven races at Angle Park and Gawler while in the care of Grange trainer Laurie Cahalan, is also the dam of Toora Ziggy.
Also trained by Cahalan, Toora Ziggy has accumulated $11,000 in his seven wins and on Monday night will contest a Breeders Prelude (515 m) at Angle Park as will the Bartholomew pair which has been granted exemption to travel to compete in the paid-up series.
Galactic Horizon’s litter sister Galactic Destiny, still trained by Steve Bartholomew but these days raced by his daughter, made a successful return to racing in the Williams Crane Hire Stake (400 m) after being off the scene since last November.
Finding the front down the back, Galactic Destiny, despite using plenty of the track, finished strongly down the outside in the run home to defeat Double Love by 1½ lengths in a best of day 23.20 seconds.
Bringing up a treble for the Galactic Rumball litter was Galactic Athena, untroubled in winning The Border Watch Mixed Stake (512 m) by six lengths over Fabs You Go in 29.73 seconds and in doing so giving the Bartholomew kennels their biggest day ever at the track.
Breaking that down further – a training treble for Steve Bartholomew (Galactic Horizon, Galactic Destiny and Galactic Athena), one win for Lee Bartholomew (Rough Pearl) and ownership doubles to Elysia Bartholomew (Rough Pearl, Galactic Destiny) and Robert Chuck (Galactic Horizon, Galactic Athena). Plus second placings to Dick Grayson and Azumi Stringer.
