It was a good night for Millicent-based pair Mark Dwyer and Dave Green at Angle Park last Thursday when Canya Striker and Sher Zany were successful at SA greyhound racing’s main meeting of the week.
Dwyer, who is the Mount Gambier Greyhound Racing Club manager, purchased Canya Striker from Victoria in September. At the time the black dog had won one race over 715 metres at Sandown Park.
He had entrusted the training of the dog to Meningie-based Tim Richards who went into last week’s 595 metre event with Canya Striker having won his past three starts for a total of five wins from only seven local appearances.
This was going to be his toughest test, though – Thursday night at Angle Park in Free For All company. But once again the just turned two-year-old was equal to the task when running out a 1¼ length winner over He’s Magic.
By Shima Shine, Canya Striker boasts a tremendously strong dam line, being out of Joyful, a daughter of Pechey who also produced Group 1 winning stayer Houdini Boy.
And Pechey’s dam, So Seductive, raced on 59 occasions for 20 wins, 21 placings and close to $220,000 in prize money. Among her wins were the 2010 Group 1 Bold Trease and Group 3 Sir John Dillon.
Sher Zany was purchased back in June by owner-trainer Jason Newman of Moorak and three-dog trainer/school teacher Green who is also training the son of Konomi and Sherbini.
In fact, there is also plenty of strength in Sher Zany’s dam line with Sherbini three times a winner over 720 metres at Wentworth Park (NSW) and twice at Sandown Park (Victoria) over 715 metres.
And at start number 90 last week the black dog brought up his 20th win – seven of those since relocating to Millicent.
Lining up from box seven in a Masters event over 530 metres for greyhounds 3¾ years and over, Sher Zany found himself well back early but finished strongly for a 1¾ length win over Federal Flash in a time of 30.88 seconds.
As things turned out, it was a long day for the intrepid travellers with a six-hour trip to Angle Park, then a later start to the night given the warm weather – Sher Zany not going around until race 11. A swab then followed after winning before another six-hour trip home.
Meanwhile, Mount Gambier’s leading trainer, Tracie Price, wrapped up a big week on the track with a win in Sunday night’s Fischer Motors Murray Bridge Country Summer Oaks (455 metres).
Into the $5,250 to the winner final with Minnie’s My Mum, the March 2023 daughter of Beast Unleashed and Mini Banjo had to work hard to find the front from box eight. But in the run home she proved too strong for the Damien Smith trained litter sisters Mallee Beauty and Culburra.
It was another big night at Murray Bridge for Price who also won the Murray Bridge Anniversary Cup (530 m) with Wild Milly, winner of last month’s Newman McDonnell Memorial (512 m) at Tara Raceway.
And wins by Compton Copy and Wild Banker made it four wins for the night while Sudoku Jaxon was runner-up to Darcy Dakota in the Fischer Motors Murray Bridge Country Summer Derby (455 m).
A week prior at Murray Bridge and Price had also trained four winners – Hit Top Gear, Croatian Comet, Sudoku Jaxon and Wild Banker.
Then on Thursday at Tara Raceway’s time-graded meeting, Price shared training honours with Allendale East-based David Peckham – the pair both leading in three winners.
Price’s treble kicked off with Dirty Dash in the Produce Store TG5+W Stake (512 m) and was followed by Compton Rocky in the Winning Post Supplies TG1-4W Stake (512 m) and Rocklea Earle who found winning form again with a dashing display in the Metal Worx TG5+W Stake (400 m).
Dirty Dash, appreciating a drop in class, ran a quick 29.50 seconds when defeating Anna Rhode by 4¼ lengths for Price, who races the son of Fernando Bale and Angel Dash in partnership with Garry Harding and Liam Sharam.
Peckham kicked the day’s racing off with a win by Aston Chief in the Commercial Hotel Maiden Stake (305 m). He then followed up with Aston Ramona in the Trackside Pet Meats Pick 6 TG1-4W Stake (400 m).
Sitting in second spot on the local leading trainers’ list, Peckham brought up his 75th local win this year with Sophie’s Beast in the Gordon Refrigeration TG1-4W Stake (400 m).
