David Peckham, of Allendale East, went into today’s Tara Raceway meeting having trained 98 winners at the track this year. By race two, the Bourne Kennels Stake (400 metres) – a heat of a grade five series – he was sitting on 99 winners after Aston Hayato led all the way to defeat Confession by 1½ lengths in 23.06 seconds.
But it wasn’t until the last race, the Greyhound-Data.com Open Stake (400 m), that he hit the 100, Keen One bringing up his fourth successive short-course win at the track when leading all the way to defeat Angelo’s Entity by 1¼ lengths in a near-record 22.76 seconds.
This is the second consecutive year that Peckham has trained 100 winners at the track, last year the milestone being reached in early November.
Keen One, raced by Malcolm Keenan of Tarpeena, has now won nine races at Tara Raceway this year and is only four points behind Perseverance in the Mount Gambier Greyhound of the Year award.
