Training facilities set to receive further boost

The Mount Gambier Greyhound Racing Club’s training facilities at Tara Raceway will soon receive a further boost following the release this week of a plan for the proposed Greyhound Education Circuit (GEC).

To be situated in the fenced-off slipping track area, the GEC, according to MGGRC president Noel Perry, was basically a mini track designed to give pups an introduction to chasing the lure prior to moving onto the race track.

“The GEC is certainly state of the art and a far cry from the old style ‘bullrings’,” he said. “In addition, it will also include two starting boxes on a concrete pad and four ‘viewing boxes’, also on a concrete pad.

“Really, the GEC is all about building the confidence of pups and getting them accustomed to the sights and sounds of a lure in motion. And we certainly thank Greyhound Racing SA for throwing its support behind this project.”

It has been said that a greyhound might need to use a GEC only two or three times during its puppy life but that could mean the difference between that pup making it to the race track or not.

From a training point of view, the Greyhound Education Circuit will complement Tara Raceway’s dual slipping tracks and the recently-completed hand-operated drag lure.

And for the young pup, following education in the GEC, the next step may well be the Tara Raceway race track on Monday mornings when trials will be conducted for unbroken greyhounds.
