The highs and lows of the Calcutta
Sunday, February 26, 2017
Saturday night’s ClassicBet Mount Gambier Gold Cup Calcutta at Tara Raceway saw outstanding Adelaide bitch Fabregal top the auction at $380.
And at Sunday’s cup heats meeting, when most of the away greyhounds struggled to come to terms with Tara Raceway, it was Fabregal who shrugged off the “first time on the track hoodoo” to defeat a gallant Supreme Deal by 3¼ lengths while Gargle It finished the race off well a further neck behind.
The Robyn Mackellar trained Fabregal’s time of 29.87 seconds wasn’t the fastest but for a greyhound having her first look at the track the effort was still pretty special.
At the other end of the scale was the Peter Byrne trained Arabella Figg who was picked up for $20 on Saturday night and then came out on Sunday afternoon to score a shock win in 30.23 seconds.
Bernie to the Max kept those in attendance at the Calcutta entertained with lead singer Bernie Rogers probably still wondering what might have been had that bloody lure kept going at the Friday meeting when his greyhound Jasmine Lilly was in front.
And MC Kevin “KD” Douglas and auctioneer Chris Manser, as equally as entertaining, kept things moving to the extent that the Calcutta winner will now collect something like $1900. All of a sudden, $380 for Fabregal doesn’t look too bad.
Sunday’s heat winners and Calcutta purchase prices were Thanks Captain ($39), Arabella Figg ($20), Mojito Mayhem ($142), Berry Bling ($86), Hutch ($80), Colden Girl ($56), Harry Aztec ($26), Fabregal ($380).
An interesting line-up for sure and certain to be made even more interesting after the box draw is conducted on Tuesday afternoon.
