For Edenhope greyhound Another Pick it’s been a case of her leading the way in the Mount Gambier Greyhound of the Year for much of 2021.
Owner-trainer Cap Abbott’s daughter of Unlawful Entry and Proud Fantasy was in front by April, lost the lead the following month to Sianna Magic but by August was back in front again. She hasn’t been headed since.
Bungaloo Anne’s barnstorming finish to the year has certainly added interest to the GOTY. Trained at Kongorong by John Little, the daughter of Pure Titanium x Bungaloo Sunset, from a GOTY point of view, hadn’t been sighted until September.
But with both greyhounds having now won 12 races for the year the only thing separating them is Another Pick’s couple of extra second placings – in other words, four points.
And in a bid to perhaps grab an advantage, both are nominated for 5+ wins 400 metre events at tomorrow’s time-graded meeting. Incidentally, Bungaloo Anne will be chasing her fifth consecutive win in a race that wouldn’t be out of place on a Category 2 day.
Abbott, who won the 2019 GOTY with Black Spring, has never made any secret of the fact that he would love to win the award for a second time.
“I’m planning to breed with Another Pick and a Greyhound of the Year win against her name, irrespective of where the track is, certainly won’t do her breeding prospects any harm,” he recently said.
In a bid to keep their hopes alive, Abbott and Little have also nominated Another Pick and Bungaloo Anne for Monday’s grade five heats over 400 metres at Tara Raceway.
Then, if all else fails, there’s still the time-graded meeting on Thursday, January 30 to wrap up the year.
