For the sake of the headline, we’ll assume that Mo Town Roy’s owners, the Micallef brothers, named their greyhound after the dynamic singer Roy G. Hemmings and the legendary Motown sound.
Anyway, whatever the origin, Mo Town Roy was certainly on song at Tara Raceway last Sunday when leading all the way in the Rock’s Retreat Mixed Stake (600 metres) for Edenhope trainer Cap Abbott.
Coming into the race from box five on the back of a close-up fourth over 650 metres at Warrnambool 10 days earlier, Mo Town Roy carved out a quick 35.02 seconds when defeating Stylish Moment by 5¾ lengths.
The winning time was actually one of the quickest recorded at Tara Raceway this year, bettered only by track record holder McIvor Verna (34.84 sec.) and Paraphernalia (34.97 sec.).
The win continued Abbott’s good year at Tara Raceway, 23 wins and 54 minor placings seeing him currently placed in sixth spot in the Mount Gambier Leading Trainer list.
By the Irish-bred Razldazl Jayfkay, Mo Town Roy is out of New Year’s Punch, a winner of 12 races including middle-distance success at Sandown Park and The Meadows and also the dam – from an earlier litter by Cosmic Rumble – of Bruce Tycoon, a winner of 33 races and more than $256,000 in prizemoney.
Abbott, who has had last Sunday’s grade 4/5 winner in his kennels since July last year, has now won 12 races with the 35 kilogram brindle dog, including four over 600 metres at Angle Park.
And the city track is where the widely-travelled trainer is heading tomorrow with Mo Town Roy who has drawn box one in the $2640-to-the-winner Sky Racing Mixed Stake (600 m).
