Shannah’s Might, or Slim as he is affectionately known around Tracie and Karen Price’s Compton greyhound kennels, was the quickest of the three Gordon Refrigeration Feature Grade Five heat winners at Tara Raceway last Sunday.
Fresh from a recent 388 metre win at Angle Park, the son of Fear Zafonic x Shannah’s Star took over the running down the back from Lektra Fire with the result from then on never in doubt as he stormed home to defeat Rising Girl and the tiring early leader by 6½ lengths in 30.16 seconds – the best time all day for the 512 metre journey.
“He’s just such a wonderful dog to have around the kennels – a real professional,” Karen Price said of Shannah’s Might as the 35 kilogram black dog was led from the track by kennel foreperson Elisha Antunov.
Now 4½ years old, Shannah’s Might has raced on 66 occasions for 17 wins and 22 minor placings – an impressive record although one that probably could have been much better but for an injury sustained early in his career when he had won eight races from his first 15 starts.
And regular Tara Raceway racegoers still remember the day more than two years ago when, at only his second race start, he won his maiden over 512 metres by 11 lengths in near track record time of 29.77 seconds.
Shannah’s Might, who has drawn box eight again in Sunday’s final, was the first of four winners for Price – Black Fields, Which Moment and Gangster Of Love bringing up his third quartet at Tara Raceway this year.
The win of Black Fields, a giveaway who has now won two successive races at Tara Raceway for young owner Ben Price, was a timely win for the father and son combination given that it was Father’s Day.
Black Fields will now jump from box six in the final while Price will also be represented by Sophie’s Moment, far from disgraced when running a 3½ length third to Turbo Road in the first heat.
