Koroit breeder, owner, trainer and educator, Peter Byrne, didn’t have much luck at last Friday’s Tara Raceway time-graded meeting with Lektra Elsa.
However, the night previously at Sandown Park, Saint David who is trained by leading Victorian conditioner Robert Britton for Byrne, raced his way into tomorrow night’s Launching Pad final over 515 metres.
The Launching Pad, for 64 greyhounds with no more than six wins and 30 starts, carried a $2000 entry fee with Byrne already well in front after Saint David’s heat and semi-final win saw him collect $17,000 in prizemoney.
By Cosmic Rumble x Mepunga Kirsty, Saint David was bred by Byrne who originally was looking to start the black dog off at a time-graded meeting at Tara Raceway before opting for a Sandown Park maiden.
“That was back in June last year,” he recalled. “I thought he could win, backed him accordingly and then watched him run fifth.”
The following month Byrne and Britton swapped Saint David and Silverali for training purposes with the former jumping from box five in tonight’s $150,000-to-the-winner Launching Pad.
Also at Sandown Park tomorrow night is fellow Koroit trainer Garry Anders who has Wilbur Deeds jumping from box one in a grade five final over 515 metres.
By Oaks Road out of Mepunga Lana (a litter sister to Mepunga Kirsty), Wilbur Deeds was an impressive 512 metre Tara Raceway winner in 29.71 seconds earlier this month.
