For long-time Koroit owner-trainer Garry Anders last Thursday’s wins by littermates Daisy Deeds and Freddy Deeds had been his best day at Tara Raceway since March 5, 2020.
That was when Fernando Deeds won his maiden over 400 metres in a time of 23.31 seconds and Beaut Deeds – the dam of Daisy Deeds and Freddy Deeds – also won over 400 metres in 23.34 seconds.
By boom sire Bernardo, Daisy Deeds went into the Rocks Tavern Maiden Stake (305 m) with four minor placings from five starts and as the last of four litter members still chasing her first win.
But she was always on the pace from box eight before finishing strongly in the run home for a 1¼ length win over Aston Boris in 17.97 seconds.
And in the Carlin & Gazzard Stake (400 m) Freddy Deeds quickly found the front from box one before running away to a 3¼ length win over On The Northerns in 23.24 seconds which ensured he made it through to the Fast Forward final.
According to Anders, Beaut Deeds had always tried hard in her races but more often than not seemed to be plagued with problems.
“For all that though she did win seven races, including a couple here at Mount Gambier and one at Sandown Park over 515 metres,” he said.
Anders said he was now also busy breaking-in a litter of 11 dog pups out of Beaut Deeds’ second litter, this time by Sennachie.
“I tell you what, I had to come out of retirement and build some more kennels when this litter was whelped,” the former bricklayer said.
His involvement in the sport goes back more than 30 years and to a greyhound called Crafty Deeds, a son of Brother Fox and Dirty Deeds.
“He was the start of the Deeds line and still rates as the best dog I’ve ever been associated with,” Anders said.
“He won 12 races, ran fourth to Ginger in the 1989 Australian Cup at Olympic Park and later a part-share of him was sold for $25,000.”
Earlier in the day at last Thursday’s meeting the Greg Martlew Autos Maiden Stake (305 m) got racing off to a rough start when $31 chance Flying Madeline led all the way for a 4¼ length win over Flame To Burn in 17.90 seconds.
By Barcia Bale out of Priscilla Wang, a winner of two races at Bendigo over 500 metres, Flying Madeline is owned and trained at Hamilton by Tony Harding who purchased the brindle bitch as a pup from Bendigo breeder Mark Strahan.
“I saw her when she was about four months old and being reared at Long Gully,” Harding said. “I liked the look of her and after taking possession entrusted the rearing to Michael and Vicki Niele of Berringa Park.”
And Harding was the first to admit that later on when a subsequent breaking-in report suggested his July 2021 whelping should be winning races he became a little excited as to his pup’s prospects.
But the first win – in fact, the first placing – had been a while coming as Flying Madeline lined up for start number 17.
Later, Harding viewed numerous replays of the race. The result never changed and nor has the trainer’s unwavering belief in Flying Madeline.
Meanwhile, the Fast Forward heats threw up an interesting qualifier in the form of Survive The Fury, owned and trained at Langhorne Creek by Tony Hinrichsen.
By Filthy Phantom out of Rusty Fury, the 18-month-old Survive The Fury won his maiden at his second start the previous week when defeating littermate Full On Fury at Tara Raceway over 400 metres in a handy 23.45 seconds.
Last week he stepped up in grade when contesting a 400 metre 1-4 wins heat. And at only his third start, the black youngster overcame a slow start from box six before working home really well to be beaten a length by Nimue in 23.29 seconds.
