Cudgee greyhound trainer Gary Hunt was back at Tara Raceway a fortnight ago – still chasing his first win at the track after an absence of 12 years.

And a couple of his dogs in Lucy Jane and Fabulous Hudson showed him enough to warrant a trip back to Mount Gambier last Sunday for heats of a grade six series over 400 metres.

Fabulous Hudson, a son of Shima Shine and Fernando’s Glory, won his maiden up the Richmond straight in late February before finding his way down to Hunt’s kennels at the end of April.

Then in last Sunday’s first heat, the Da’Leni Meats Stake, he finished the race off well when going down by three-quarters of a length after running second to Peter Franklin’s Dell Mister in 23.34 seconds.

In the second heat, the Commercial Hotel Stake, Lucy Jane settled in second spot behind tearaway leader Lust To Burn before running out a 1¼ length winner over the early leader in 23.33 seconds.

Owned in Queensland by Gary McLauchlan, Lucy Jane is a daughter of Tommy Shelby and Ivy Wren and was bred by the Fulton family at Ecklin South.

The litter also includes Miss Mary Jo, a finalist in this year’s Group 3 Mount Gambier Cup (512 m) for Geoff Kenna and Colin Kelly.

And in the third and final heat, the Williams Crane Hire Stake, Aston Azul never looked like being beaten when leading all the way and defeating Aero Express by 2¼ lengths in a quick 23.11 seconds.

Trained at Allendale East by David Peckham, the win was Aston Azul’s third in succession at Tara Raceway.
