Devil breaks through for husband and wife team

Devil’s Disguise, a rising four-year-old giveaway greyhound, finally broke through for his first win for Shaun and Rachel Baulch of Mortlake when successful in last Thursday’s Progreyhoundtips.com Stake (400 metres) at Tara Raceway’s time-graded meeting.

Shaun Baulch, of Mortlake, with Devil’s Disguise after his win at Tara Raceway last Thursday.

Having his 21st start for the husband and wife owner-trainer team, the son of Shima Bar and Sacramento Sal finished strongly in the run home when defeating Cawbourne Pin by 2½ lengths in a time of 23.49 seconds.

But according to Shaun Baulch, 38, a Thursday afternoon regular at Mount Gambier greyhound meetings, he had expected the 103-start veteran – part of their five-dog kennel – to have picked up a win long before now.

“We got him in April from Andrea Gurry of Nhill. And judging by some of the times he had previously run at Horsham I thought he would have been more than competitive at Mount Gambier on a Thursday.

“Anyway, he’s finally broken through. This was particularly pleasing for Rachel who doesn’t get over to Mount Gambier too often. She’s got a bit on her plate, what with looking after our six-year-old daughter Scarlett and also attending to the dogs at home.”

Devil’s Disguise’s win came on the back of a fifth placing behind Hokkaido Miss the Monday prior at Warrnambool over 450 metres. Later, Baulch headed back to Mortlake with Hokkaido Miss after owner-trainer Paul Hammerstein of Ararat, presented him with the winner as a giveaway.
