Better finish to the week for visiting trainer

It’s fair to say that last week didn’t start out all that well for Langhorne Creek trainer Tony Hinrichsen who had four greyhounds engaged at Angle Park’s Monday night meeting.

In fact, the night turned out to be a complete disaster for the long-time trainer when his car broke down in transit. His four dogs – Barefoot Rebel, Loving The Cash, Filthy Phantom and Balboa Fury – were subsequently declared late scratchings.

And being non-arrivals at the track, he copped a mandatory 28 days with each of his dogs. However, Hinrichsen later confirmed that the suspensions had been overturned.

Tony Hinrichsen with Winnie Blues, the second leg of his double at Tara Raceway last Thursday.

“It was certainly frustrating as I was only about 10 minutes from Angle Park when the car broke down,” he said. “But once I presented documentation to Greyhound Racing SA stewards from the RAA the penalties were waived.”

This meant Barefoot Rebel, Filthy Phantom and Balboa Fury were free to join six of their kennelmates and make the considerably longer trip to Mount Gambier for Thursday’s time-graded meeting at Tara Raceway.

“Given that it was the same car as Monday night that was towing the trailer I don’t mind telling you it was a relief when I reached Mount Gambier,” he said.

Barefoot Rebel, a son of My Bro Fabio and Tarks Black Rose, continued his good form at Tara Raceway for Hinrichsen – the black dog’s fourth trainer.

Previously a winner of three 512 metre races at the track, Barefoot Rebel dropped back to 400 metres on Thursday when scoring a best of day 23.13 seconds seven lengths win over Saint Ollie in the Exchange Printers Stake.

And bringing up Hinrichsen’s fifth double at Tara Raceway this year was Winnie Blues who ended her trainer’s ordinary start to the week with a two-length win in the Gambier Vets Stake (400 m).

Based at Langhorne Creek – her fourth kennel – since the end of March, the daughter of Orson Allen x Flash Glance brought up her first win for Hinrichsen when proving too strong for Arrow Bar Teddy in a time of 23.54 seconds.

Meanwhile, Hatchet Harry ran out a 4¼ length winner over Gizmo Osti in the Swallow Drive Meats Fast Forward 1-4 wins final (400 m) in a time of 23.38 seconds.

Owned and trained at Terang by Mark Roberts, the 27½ kilogram son of Zambora Brockie and Midnight Maid is the second monthly Fast Forward winner to come from the Roberts kennels – Lubbock Lad winning back in April for son Christian.

Other monthly winners have been Aston Knox (Paul Cusack), Johnny Deeds (Dean Fennell), Barefoot Rebel (Tony Hinrichsen) and Wind Burn Flash (Jason Newman).

Greyhounds for the Fast Forward 1-4 wins heats are selected from Worst to Best. However, the final field of eight comprises greyhounds running the fastest times in the heats, regardless of their finishing position in those heats.

A blinkered Two Fifty Three was successful at Tara Raceway last Thursday for Adam Mackereth.

The Mount Gambier Greyhound Racing Club is now also running a Fast Forward 1-4 wins over 512 metres on a monthly basis. The Fast Forward finals over both distances carry Category 2 prizemoney.

Another greyhound to don a blinkered muzzle and bounce back after a race indiscretion was Two Fifty Three, owned and trained in Mount Gambier by Adam Mackereth.

And the daughter of Elite State and Dusty Pearl never put a foot wrong when leading all the way in Thursday’s Produce Store Maiden Stake (400 m) to defeat Star Reign by 6½ lengths in 23.43 seconds.

Mackereth has also won with Two Fifty Three’s litter sister Four Longnecks. So far, three others from the litter of six – Hellboy, Unique Pearl and Misguided Pearl – have also raced and won.
