For Koroit breeder-owner-trainer Garry Anders it had been a case of the former bricklayer having to go back to work last year and build more kennels to accommodate his 11-dog litter by Sennachie out of Beaut Deeds.
Fast forward to early last month and Bert Deeds, the first of the February 2022 litter to race, looked to be right in the mix on debut before falling approaching the first turn at Tara Raceway over 305 metres.
Fortunately there was no harm done and last Monday he was back on the track at Warrnambool where he finished a luckless fifth over 390 metres.
Then, a few days later Bert Deeds returned to Mount Gambier for the Todd’s Photographics Maiden Stake (305 m). Always on the pace from box eight, the black dog ultimately was too strong for Bounce To Burn in the run home when scoring by three-quarters of a length in 18.13 seconds.
“I thought he might have run a bit quicker than that but it was certainly pleasing to see the litter open its winning account,” Anders said. “And I reckon the run will do him the world of good.”
The win was Anders’ first at Tara Raceway since early May when Bert Deeds’ half-brother and half-sister, Freddy Deeds and Daisy Deeds (by Bernardo), won over 400 metres and 305 metres.
