April’s pair doubles up again

For the second time this year Princetown-based two-dog trainer April Janssen landed a double at Tara Raceway when Swift Gift and Princetown Flyer were successful at last Thursday’s time-graded meeting.

Swift Gift, a daughter of Aston Rupee and Mepunga Bella, led all the way in the Cadillac Racing TG5+W Stake (400 metres) for a 3½ length win over Bourne Lickety in a personal best time of 22.94 seconds.

And Princetown Flyer made a real mess of the Produce Store TG1-4W Stake (512 m) field after leading all the way for an 8¼ length win over Bomb Rocky in 30.17 seconds.

The pair’s previous double had been back on Sunday, September 7 when they had both won over 512 metres – Princetown Flyer in 30.04 and Swift Gift in 30.10.

So far, Janssen’s highlight with her greyhounds has been Swift Gift’s win in the October 5 Labour Day Cup (512 m) over Lochinvar Pearl. This resulted in the first trophy won by either of her dogs and had her keen to try and then win a presentation rug to complement the cup.

Well, she will get another chance later this month with the running of the Williams Crane Hire Christmas Cup, an Open event over 512 metres. And it comes with a presentation rug to the winner.

Janssen’s pair actually reached the final of last year’s Christmas Cup – Swift Gift drawing box one and Princetown Flyer jumping from the seven

However, as luck would have it, Swift Gift was scratched from the final with reserve runner Minnie’s My Mum taking her place from the inside draw. And the Tracie Price trained reserve led all the way for a four length win in 29.89 seconds.

In what was a pretty handy final, kennelmate Wild Star finished second while Princetown Flyer, a $60 chance, gave Janssen plenty to cheer about when running third.

And complementing the Williams Crane Hire Christmas Cup is the Peter Whitehead Memorial Maiden (400 m) which was won last year by the Steve Bartholomew trained Hey You Guys who defeated Way Cool by two lengths in 23.26 seconds.
