Retired Koroit dairy farmer Gerald McKenna brought up his first win at Tara Raceway this year when Mustang Bay defeated litter brother and kennelmate Ranger Bay in last Friday’s Metal Worx Maiden Stake (512 m).
By Nolen out of the unraced Fawn Bay, the littermates were bred and owned by McKenna’s wife Carolyn and gave their trainer his first winner at Tara Raceway since December 27 when another litter brother, Mongolian Bay, was successful.
The McKennas, as a rule, prefer to breed their own stock, Fawn Bay’s half-sister Rosie Bay, a winner of two races at Tara Raceway, as well as Potts Park and Goulburn, recently whelping to the flying Aussie Infrared.
However, McKenna made a detour on the way home last Friday, picking up a Tracie Price-bred four-month-old pup by Spring Gun out of 2016 Mount Gambier Cup finalist Grimsby Girl.
“We do most of our racing over here so I figured we may as well get an SA-bred pup and try and pick up some of the breeding bonuses that go with SA pups,” he said.
