Compton trainer Tracie Price kicked off last Sunday’s meeting with a couple of special maiden winners.
Compton Brockie, who lined up from box seven in the Trackside Pet Meats Pick 6 Maiden Stake (305 metres), quickly found the front before running out a two length winner over Coastal Value in a time of 17.89 seconds.
By Zambora Brockie out of Raw Luxury – who won eight races for Price at Tara Raceway over distances ranging from 277 metres to 512 metres – Compton Brockie, according to Price’s wife Karen, had an interesting start to life.
“He was the only pup in the litter and Raw Luxury totally rejected him,” she said. “He started off inside the house and slept in an Esky with a hot water bottle.
“And I don’t mind telling you, he certainly ruled the house during school holidays.
“But by the time he reached nine weeks of age we were able to place him to be reared with a litter of our Tandiki pups so in the end everything worked out pretty well.”
Then, in the following race, the Produce Store Maiden Stake (400 m), Compton Special kept her mind on the job in the home straight when defeating Sir Tom by three lengths in 24.25 seconds.
By Aussie Infrared out of Banjo Lass, the white and brindle bitch has been deaf since birth.
“When we realised she wasn’t reacting to sound, our first thought was to place her in the Greyhounds As Pets (GAP) program,” Price said.
“But GAP said she was too young. So when she reacted favourably to a teaser we decided to keep her because she had developed into such a beautiful dog.
“And at breaking-in she turned out to be a good box dog – moving straight to the front when placed in the boxes.”
Later in the day Tracie Price took his tally to five winners for the day when Compton Charlie, Lakeview Jet and Hannah Rocks were also successful.
