CELEBRATING IN STYLE – Tara Raceway, Sunday, January 22, 2017

006

Moesha “Mo” Canala must have been wondering what was going on when she was led, blindfolded, from the clubrooms at Tara Raceway on Sunday. But Mo, who celebrated her 16th birthday on Sunday, received the surprise of her life when removing the blindfold. A regular catcher at the race meetings, Mo had been putting away her catching fees towards the purchase of a new car. But with the help of family, a slick little black Suzuki adorned with a big red bow and custom plates had been fast-tracked for her birthday and was waiting for her at the track.

KC ON THE TROPHY TRAIL AGAIN – Tara Raceway, Sunday, December 18, 2016

011The last time we caught up with Kevin “KC” Clayfield was back in November when he was making a mad dash into the Tara Raceway clubrooms with a whopping big cutlery set that Glenville Jester, which he part-owns, had received after winning the Newman McDonnell Memorial. Well, he was on the trophy trail again last Sunday, quickly grabbing the presentation rug and cup after the Jester, who is trained by his brother Richard, continued on his winning way in the Christmas Cup final. “Richard can have the cup but I’m keeping the rug,” KC was heard to say. KC looked the worst for wear when this picture was taken as he had just fallen when catching Glenville Jester after the win. He was actually taken to hospital for observation but we’re pleased to report that all is good and he’s now home.

WHAT A DIFFERENCE A DAY MAKES! – Tara Raceway, Friday, December 9, 2016

006

Normally the Tara Raceway greyhound fields, whether for Friday or Sunday meetings, are published in the Mount Gambier newspaper The Border Watch on a Friday. But for some reason fields for the December 9 meeting were run in the Thursday edition. It seems one regular racegoer, who shall remain nameless, was totally thrown by the change in procedure and figured when he saw the fields that it must have been Friday and he duly turned up at the track for the 12-race card. Needless to say, from a racing point of view there wasn’t much happening at the track on the Thursday. Still convinced it was Friday and at a loss as to why there was no race meeting, the unnamed racegoer sought out a local trainer at home who pointed out that it was Thursday and the dogs were on the next day. The unnamed racegoer then asked the trainer if he could keep the incident quiet. Yeah, like that was going to happen!

Picture: The unnamed racegoer spotted at Tara Raceway’s “phantom meeting” on Thursday.

JONESY TAKES THE X380 FOR A SPIN – Tara Raceway, Monday, December 5, 2016

002

Talk about kids with new toys! Seems Tara Raceway groundsman Monty Wilson and his volunteer assistant Kevin Jones are fighting over who gets to sit on the club’s newly-acquired John Deere X380 ride-on mower. Well, not really but it is a nice unit and with a 48 inch cut will make the job of cutting the extensive grassed areas somewhat easier. And with automatic sprinklers to be installed next week to cover much of the area in front of the clubhouse and surrounds, Tara Raceway should be a treat come Mount Gambier Cup time in late February-early March.

A HOME FROM HOME FOR DAVID AND TONI – Tara Raceway, Sunday, August 28, 2016

001David and Toni Jones, of Devon Meadows, did it in style when they travelled over to Mount Gambier for the double-header meeting in their Jayco Conquest motor home. It was perhaps a trial run for when they take off later this year on a round-Australia trip. David is pictured with Twistex which was successful at the August 26 meeting and will join the couple when they embark on their forthcoming trip.

BARING IT ALL AT TARA RACEWAY

No, this Todd Nicholson photograph certainly wasn’t taken at the Anniversary Cup meeting on Sunday, July 24, 2016 which turned out to be very ordinary from a weather point of view although a large crowd enjoyed some outstanding racing. The photograph was discovered by pure chance in the office during the day and goes back to 2003 when members of the Ballarat Umpires League stripped off for the Open Sprint.

JACK GETS THE CHOP – Tara Raceway, Friday, April 8

020

Penshurst owner Jack Casey, a Tara Raceway regular, after much coaxing finally joined up as a member of the Mount Gambier Greyhound Racing Club last week. And with a members’ meat tray draw conducted at every race meeting Casey was hopeful of getting a quick return on his membership fee – which wasn’t all that much really considering he exercised his right and claimed concession privileges! Members must be on course to claim the meat tray, which is donated by Swallow Drive Meats, and last Friday after six marbles had been drawn there was still no on-course winner. No prizes for guessing whose number came out in the seventh draw. The Dawn and David Kay cash draw, which jackpots if the winning member is not on course, was not won. Casey now has sights set firmly on that.

HEY DUDE, THE PLAYGROUND WILL SOON BE UP AND RUNNING! Tara Raceway, December 6, 2015

The fact that the automatic track watering system is now operational, along with a revamped TAB facility, was of little consequence to this “Little Rock Dude” who was anything but impressed that the playground is not yet open for business. But young Wesley won’t have to wait much longer with the facility expected to be operational for the Christmas meeting on December 20.

RAINBOW CLUB PAYS A VISIT TO THE DOGS – FRIDAY, AUGUST 28, 2015

014

Volunteer bus driver Rob Irving and co-ordinator Keva Buckell brought the Friday group of Mount Gambier’s Rainbow Club out to Tara Raceway on Friday afternoon to witness the running of the Winter Classic.

The Rainbow Club, which is part of the South East Regional Community Health Service, meets Monday to Friday at its James Street venue, and gives older people a safe environment for a variety of activities.

Ms Buckell said the group had really enjoyed watching several races and that she was hopeful of getting them back for another Friday race meeting.

“As an example, during September we have bus trips planned for luncheons at Millicent, Tantanoola, Flanagans, Port MacDonnell and the Bellum Hotel.

“I think the Friday group would really enjoy lunch in the Tara Raceway clubrooms from where they would also have an unobstructed view of all the greyhound racing action.”

THERA WAVE ON SHOW AT TARA RACEWAY – SUNDAY, AUGUST 9, 2015

Peter Bryce, of Winning Post Supplies, was on track on Sunday and demonstrated the Thera Wave Neuromuscular Stimulator for the benefit of trainers. Bryce, who is the exclusive distributor, said it was easier for trainers to evaluate the results on themselves rather than with a greyhound. He is pictured treating Moorak trainer Allan Holmes with the Thera Wave. Winning connections of the forthcoming Berringa Park Kennels Iron Dog Three-Distance Series will receive one of the units as part of the prize.
